Ennostar boosts blue micro-LED modulation bandwidth more than tenfold to 2.1GHz
In what it claims is a breakthrough in micro-LED optical communications, Ennostar Corp of Hsinchu, Taiwan (a provider of integrated optoelectronic solutions, specializing in R&D and manufacturing III–V materials) says that its R&D team has increased the single-channel –3dB modulation bandwidth of its blue micro-LED to 2.1GHz at a current density of 2kA/cm2. The sample further demonstrated a modulation bandwidth of up to 3.3GHz at a current density of 5kA/cm2. These results approach the commercial specifications required for short-reach optical transmission using micro-LEDs, it adds.

Ennostar attributes the improvement in bandwidth to its expertise in III–V compound semiconductor epitaxial technologies, micro-LED chip architecture, and process integration. By optimizing both the epitaxial structure and material quality, the R&D team overcame previous performance bottlenecks, delivering substantially higher modulation bandwidth while simultaneously maintaining low power consumption and what it claims is excellent thermal management — two critical requirements for practical optical interconnect applications.
Ennostar says that it is advancing toward higher-bandwidth and energy-efficient transmission solutions to meet the escalating demands of AI workloads, hyperscale data centers, and high-performance computing (HPC).
As demand for next-generation optical interconnect technologies accelerates, Ennostar is continuing to expand its presence in emerging applications, with optical communications identified as one of its key strategic growth areas. The firm has a diversified technology roadmap based on three complementary optical light-source platforms: micro-LEDs, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), and continuous-wave distributed feedback (CW-DFB) lasers.
Looking ahead, Ennostar aims to continue to enhance modulation bandwidth, improve electro-optical conversion efficiency, and strengthen device reliability, leveraging its core compound semiconductor technologies to deliver optical solutions for the next generation of high-speed data communications.
