Wolfspeed agrees multi-year deal to supply 1200V silicon carbide devices to BorgWarner
Wolfspeed Inc of Durham, NC, USA — which makes silicon carbide (SiC) materials and power semiconductor devices — has announced a multi-year agreement to supply its 1200V silicon carbide devices for the next-generation 800V SiC-based inverter platform of BorgWarner Inc of Auburn Hills, MI, USA (which provides sustainable mobility solutions for the vehicle market) as a strategic partner.
The agreement strengthens the companies’ long-standing collaboration while providing BorgWarner with a long-term supply of SiC technology for next-generation electric vehicle (EV) and power conversion applications.
Electric vehicles accounted for 25% of new cars sold globally in 2025, and the International Energy Agency projects that EVs could represent about half of global car sales by 2035. As auto-makers scale next-generation EV platforms, silicon carbide is increasingly critical to delivering the efficiency, power density and performance required by advanced vehicle architectures, states Wolfspeed.
“Our strategy is to combine our technology leadership with deep, long-term customer partnerships,” says Matthias Buchner, seniior VP, global sales & chief marketing officer. “Our supply agreement with BorgWarner demonstrates that strategy, bringing together advanced silicon carbide technology, proven quality and reliability, and scaled 200mm manufacturing capabilities to deliver the performance and supply confidence BorgWarner needs for their next-generation EV platform.”
Wolfspeed says that its Gen 5 silicon carbide technology is designed to support the efficiency, performance and reliability requirements of next-generation automotive power electronics.
The agreement is designed to provide BorgWarner with consistent, uninterrupted access to silicon carbide devices, reinforcing Wolfspeed’s role as a stable, long-term supply partner. It also aligns with Wolfspeed’s scaled US manufacturing capabilities, which have fully transitioned to 200mm wafers.
