Guerrilla RF launches flagship linear PA module for 4.4–5.2GHz band

Guerrilla RF Inc (GRF) of Greensboro, NC, USA — which provides radio-frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) and monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) for wireless applications — has announced the production launch of its GRF5847 linear power amplifier (PA) module, which combines fully integrated 50Ω input and output matching with what is claimed to be exceptional output power, efficiency and linearity in a compact surface-mount package.

Fabricated on a new indium gallium phosphide (InGaP) heterjunction bipolar transistor (HBT) process and packaged in a compact 2.5mm x 3.0mm LAMM-12 package, the GRF5847 requires no external input or output matching components, enabling engineers to achieve best-in-class PA performance while minimizing board area, bill-of-materials cost, and overall design complexity.

The GRF5847 is Guerrilla RF’s flagship linear PA solution for the 4.4–5.2GHz frequency band, supporting a broad range of wireless infrastructure, aerospace and defense applications. The frequency range is widely used in high-data-rate unmanned aerial systems (UAS) payload communications, upper C-band tactical radio systems, and n79 massive MIMO cellular infrastructure deployments. The device can be deployed as either a final-stage power amplifier or as a high-linearity driver amplifier, providing flexibility across a wide variety of signal-chain architectures.

“As our first fully integrated amplifier solution, this new PA advances the state of the art for our 5V InGaP HBT technology, delivering exceptional output power while maintaining excellent linearity,” says founder & CEO Ryan Pratt. “Customers in the UAS, tactical radio, and wireless infrastructure markets consistently cite the GRF5847’s broadband coverage, low EVM, and outstanding linearity as key advantages over competing solutions.”

The GRF5847 is the firm’s first fully integrated linear PA module and continues to gain traction due to its unique combination of output power, efficiency, linearity, and ease of implementation, says Guerrilla RF. Operating from a single 3–5V supply, the device delivers more than 35dBm of saturated output power across the 4.4–5.2GHz band while achieving power-added efficiency (PAE) greater than 50%. The amplifier provides about 40dB of gain and delivers 43dBm OIP3 performance, making it one of the highest-linearity solutions available in its class, it is reckoned.

The device’s exceptional native linearity often eliminates the need for digital pre-distortion (DPD), reducing system complexity and power consumption while enabling simpler and more cost-effective transmitter designs. Combined with its fully integrated on-chip matching network, the GRF5847 allows engineers to achieve what is claimed to be outstanding RF performance without the burden of extensive external matching circuitry.
