ABB to acquire silicon carbide-based power conversion firm Advantics
Electrification and automation technology provider ABB of Zurich, Switzerland is acquiring Advantics of Saint-Genis-Pouilly, France, which provides silicon carbide-based power conversion solutions (integrating hardware, firmware and software to optimize performance across demanding applications including data centers, industrial microgrids, power generation and EV infrastructure).
The acquisition expands ABB’s direct current (DC) portfolio and positions it to serve accelerating demand for efficient DC solutions. The transaction is expected to close by fourth-quarter 2026.
The IEA expects electricity’s share of final energy consumption to rise from 20% now to about 36% by 2035. ABB says that, by using advanced semiconductor technology to control more of this electrical power, its DC solutions minimize repeated AC/DC conversion and maximize efficiency.
ABB says that the acquisition of Advantics adds a high-efficiency silicon carbide power conversion technology to its broader DC portfolio, strengthening the building blocks needed to design, protect, convert, distribute and manage power in new electrical architectures with higher power density, resilience and efficiency. ABB adds that, combined with its expertise in protection, distribution, digital control and system-level engineering, the acquisition supports the development of DC systems that maximize efficiency, energy storage and flexible power sources.
