CSA Catapult issues annual report for 2024–25

The UK’s Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult has published its Annual Report for 24–25, highlighting the impact and value brought to the economy.

CSA Catapult is a not-for-profit center of excellence established in 2018 by government agency Innovate UK that specializes in the measurement, characterization, integration and validation of compound semiconductor technology spanning power electronics, advanced packaging, radio frequency and microwave, and photonics applications.

In 2024–2025, CSA Catapult:

  • opened the UK’s first open-access-setting advanced packaging facility, through £2.5m funding from Driving the Electric Revolution (DER) Challenge;
  • became a key part of REACT (Responsible Electronics and Circular Technologies Centre), a £5.5m project funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) that is creating the UK’s first sustainable electronics center in Scotland;
  • enabled customers to leverage £713.5m of public and private investment;
  • collaborated on 311 industrial projects;
  • received £17.1m of funding from collaborative R&D projects; and
  • created or safeguarded nearly 6000 jobs.

In 2024–2025, the Catapult opened a £2.5m advanced packaging facility in Newport, co-hosted the 2nd biannual IEEE Workshop on Wide Bandgap Power Devices & Applications in Europe (WiPDA-Europe 2024) and welcomed world-leading experts to South Wales; and joined Scotland’s £5.5m REACT initiative.

The Catapult secured £9m to expand advanced chip manufacturing at the University of Strathclyde — further cementing its role in growing UK compound semiconductor clusters. During this period, discussions began about the Catapult mobilizing and establishing the UK Semiconductor Centre.

In November 2024, an independent report by Cardiff University said that CSA Catapult’s R&D projects have contributed over £600m of gross valued-added (GVA) to the UK economy.

“We strengthened our UK-wide presence and expanded our technical capabilities in 2024–25, scaling our offering and expanding our global influence,” says CSA Catapult’s CEO Caroline O’Brien. “CSA Catapult is now a mature organization at the forefront of compound semiconductor technologies,” she adds. “We will continue to build on these foundations to enhance sovereign capability and deliver even greater impact for the UK semiconductor industry.”
