Global cell phone shipments show slight increase, as Samsung grabs second largest vendor title from Motorola

Global cell phone shipments reached 258m units in Q2/2007, up 11% year-over-year, and a slight increase of 4% on the 247m units shipped in Q1/2007, says market research firm Strategy Analytics in its “Q2 2007 Global Handset Market Share Update” report. Significantly, the report adds that Samsung (37.4m shipments) has become the world’s second largest handset vendor, overtaking Motorola (35.5m shipments) for the first time.

In the first six-months of 2007, global cell phone shipments reached record levels of more than half a billion. Once again, Nokia led with almost 101m cell phone sales, equating to a record global share of 39.1%.

Neil Mawston, Strategy Analytics’ associate director, said: “Total global cell phone shipments have continued to slow down this year, but Samsung is speeding up. A combination of aggressive marketing and an attractive 3G device portfolio has driven Samsung into second position for the first time ever. Its 48 percent annual growth has come partly at the expense of Motorola, whose lackluster product portfolio across all tiers urgently needs refreshing.”

Strategy Analytics analyst, Bonny Joy, added: “The second quarter of 2007 was not just about Samsung. Nokia hit a record 39 percent share, as it remained dominant in emerging markets. We expect Nokia to surpass 40 percent in the second half. Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson captured 10 percent of the global market, to register its best ever performance since the merger in 2001. Demand for its J, K and W Series phones remains high.”

According to the report, fourth-largest vendor Sony Ericsson accounted for 10% of volumes, achieving its best performance since it merged in 2001. Fifth-largest vendor LG also increased its market share and profits, achieving an 11% operating margin, its best in five years. Apple shipped 0.3m units of its recently introduced iPhone, giving it a 0.1% share. However, Strategy Analytics forecasts that this figure will be around 1% by the end of this year.

For Q3/2007, Strategy Analytics forecasts global cell phone shipments of 283m units.
