HB-LED market slows

Strategies Unlimited reports that the market for HB-LEDs slowed last year. According to the research analysts, the market grew at an average annual rate of 46% from 2001 to 2004, but in 2005 it only grew by 6.2% to reach $3.9bn.

In its new report, High-Brightness LED Market Update and Forecast – 2006, the company attributes the slow down in part to the saturation of the full color display mobile phone market and to price erosion in Asia due to overcapacity. As this situation continues, growth rates for the HB-LED market over the next five years are forecast in the range of 15-20% per year. However, the market is still expected to reach $8.3bn in 2010, driven by emerging applications such as illumination, automotive headlamps, and backlights for LCD monitors and TV screens.

On a positive note, all other HB-LED applications together grew at 18% in 2005, with the mobile appliance segment accounting for 52% of the market.

The report is available from Strategies Unlimited for $4,750.
