Finisar showcasing optical interconnects for HPC; demos 100G Quadwire EDR AOC

In booth #462 at the International Supercomputing Conference 2014 (ISC’14) in Leipzig, Germany (23-25 June), fiber-optic communications component and subsystem maker Finisar Corp of Sunnyvale, CA, USA is showcasing its portfolio of optical interconnect products, optimized for demanding high-performance computing (HPC) applications.

Based on 10G, 14G and 25G per channel solutions, the optical interconnects leverage Finisar’s patented fiber-optic technology for the transmission of high-speed data with enhanced signal integrity, higher density, lower power consumption, smaller bend radius and longer reach than traditional copper solutions.

Finisar is also featuring a live demonstration of its next-generation 100Gb/s Quadwire active optical cable (AOC), which is is currently sampling. Based on the industry-standard QSFP28 module form factor, the new AOC runs four parallel lanes of 25Gb/s to enable the next generation of InfiniBand EDR-based supercomputers.

Finisar’s display of optical interconnects includes 10G SFP+, 40G QSFP+, 100G QSFP28, and 100G CXP hot-pluggable transceivers; 10G, 40G, 56G and 100G AOCs; and 120G to 600G board-mounted optical assembly (BOA) products. These products support all common communication protocols including InfiniBand, Ethernet, SAS, PCIe and Fibre Channel, and can be used in a wide range of applications including high-performance computing and next-generation data centers.

“Our live demonstration of the 100G Quadwire active cable for InfiniBand EDR and 100G Ethernet clearly shows our continued focus to expand our portfolio of high-speed optics into the HPC and datacenter markets, leveraging Finisar's world class internal VCSEL [vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser] technology,” says senior product line manager Steffen Koehler.
