LED chip-makers Epistar, Formosa and Genesis report strong year on year revenue growth

According to DigiTimes, three of Taiwan’s main LED chip-makers reported strong year on year revenue growth in January.

Epistar Corp of Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, Taiwan reported January revenue of NT$1.3bn ($40.52m), up 3% sequentially and an increase of 205% year on year from NT$426.16m ($13.29m). The firm said that although the sequential revenue growth was slight, it was better than expected, due to strong orders for LED lighting and backlighting. Furthermore, the order visibility for AlGaInP LEDs has expanded to March and into Q2/2010 for blue LEDs.

Genesis Photonics Inc of Tainan, Taiwan saw its January revenue climb 12.1% sequentially, to NT$145.87m ($4.54m), and 310% year on year, due to demand for green LEDs for outdoor billboard and lighting systems. In particular, the outdoor billboard segment contributed almost NT$80m ($2.49m) to the firm's January figures. Genesis currently has 25 MOCVD systems and is planning to add nine more in Q1/2010, and another 10 in the second half of the year, says Digitimes.

Unlike Epistar and Genesis Photonics, Formosa Epitaxy (FOREPI) saw a slight sequential decline (5.56%) in its January revenue, which totalled NT$203.98m ($6.35m). However, year on year, revenue increased 285%.
