Luminus expands reseller channel in Japan with distributor Marubun

Luminus Devices Inc of Billerica, MA, USA, which makes solid-state light sources for illumination applications (including high-definition TVs, video projectors, avionics displays, and lighting systems), has partnered with Tokyo-based Marubun Corp for the distribution of its large-chip PhlatLight (Photonic Lattice) LEDs to electronics companies in Japan selling projector systems in the home and commercial market.

“PhlatLight LEDs are growing in global demand, with electronics companies looking to replace traditional lamp technologies with long-lasting, environmentally friendly solid-state light sources,” claims Luminus’ president & CEO Keith T.S. Ward. In particular, there is growing demand in Japan for the firm’s large-chip PhlatLight LEDs.

PhlatLight LEDs are now used as the solid-state light source in projection systems from companies including Acer, BenQ, Chi Lin, Delta Electronics, LG, Samsung and Toshiba. They provide light from a single large LED, in contrast to arrays of smaller LEDs or traditional lamp technologies currently on the market. PhlatLight LEDs are also used in lighting applications that require high brightness and efficiency, wide color gamut, high color rendering and long lifetimes (such as wide-area, entertainment, architectural, specialty, industrial and commercial lighting applications) since they enable high-lumen applications where traditional LEDs are not an option, the firm claims.

“Our long history in Japan and knowledge of the technology products industry is an important attribute when selling PhlatLight LEDs to domestic projector manufacturers,” reckons Shoji Mizuno, senior VP at Marubun. “Marubun has worked closely with Texas Instruments over the years and our understanding of its DLP [Digital Light Projection] technology and PhlatLight LEDs will help us sell the combined technologies.”
