Sony Ericsson takes 'fastest growing vendor' title

Market research company Strategy Analytics reports that a record 256m mobile phones were shipped in the third quarter of 2006, representing a 22% increase on Q3, 2005.

In its report “Vendor Market Share: Sony Ericsson the World's Fastest-Growing Mobile Vendor in Q3 2006”, Strategy Analytics says that Sony Ericsson is currently growing faster than other mobile phone vendors, knocking Motorola from the top spot. It is the first time since early 2005 that another vendor has taken the title from Motorola, says the report.

Helped by strong demand for its Walkman and CyberShot ranges, Sony Ericsson grew at 43% annually, compared with Motorola at 39%. Nokia took the third spot with unit sales of 89m (35% share), its highest rank for three years. Samsung, LG, and BenQ-Siemens took the next three positions, respectively. The report adds, however, that BenQ-Siemens will almost certainly exit the market.

With over 716m handset units shipped this year to date, Strategy Analytics forecasts total 2006 shipments of 1bn units, an increase of 22% over total 2005 shipments.
