Finisar demos new 10G SFP+ LRM, extended-reach DWDM SFP, and GPON modules

At last week’s Optical Fiber Conference in Anaheim, in Anaheim, CA, USA, Finisar demonstrated 10Gb/s small form-factor pluggable long-reach multimode (SFP+ LRM) modules.

SFP+ is a new mechanical form factor for Ethernet and storage equipment to leverage the benefits of high density and low power consumption. LRM is the latest optical reach for SFP+, joining existing 10Gb/s Ethernet short-reach (SR) and long-reach (LR) product lines. So, Finisar now offers a ‘triple-plus solution’ for 10Gb/s SFP+ (SR, LR, and LRM) supporting the three key optical reaches for datacom and storage equipment in the SFP+ form factor.

Using its low-power-dissipation 10Gb/s SFP+ LRM modules, Finisar demonstrated an error-free link over 220m of legacy multi-mode fiber and interoperability using electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) solutions from Aeluros and Vitesse. Power consumption is less than 1W.

Finisar also demonstrated new extended-reach dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) SFP transceiver modules, with error-free data transmission in C-band wavelengths over 160km of fiber using an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) without the need for dispersion compensation. The modules offer network designers the opportunity to reduce the number of amplifiers and dispersion compensation modules used. The reduction saves cost in new metro network deployments and increases reliability by eliminating points of failure.

Finally, Finisar also demonstrated transceiver modules for the fast-growing Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) optical line termination (OLT) and optical network unit (ONU) market. The modules are designed for high-volume manufacturing.
