Veeco and KOPTI collaborate to advance solid state lighting technology

Veeco Instruments Inc and Korea Photonics Technology Institute (KOPTI) have entered into a collaborative relationship, which sees Veeco place its latest generation GaNzilla MOCVD tool, technical experts and other process support into KOPTI's facility.

The Veeco-KOPTI site will be used for R&D, training and demonstrations, and will be open to other Korean HB-LED manufacturers, as well as KOPTI. As part of the agreement, Veeco and its LED customers gain access to KOPTI's LED characterization and chip fabrication facilities. One of the most interesting aspects of the agreement is the potential for Veeco and KOPTI to share solid state lighting technology and the intellectual property resulting from the collaboration.

Piero Sferlazzo, VP and general manager of Veeco's MOCVD operations, said: "We are pleased to establish this partnership with KOPTI, the leader in solid state lighting technology development in Korea. KOPTI's world-class development center and close relationships with Korea's important LED manufacturers, including Samsung and LG Innotek, make it the ideal place for Veeco to establish our base of operations in the rapidly growing Asian marketplace."
