Organisation: Tyndall National Institute

Ref. No: BC – 16

Title: Research Scientist in Gallium Nitride Lasers

Tremendous progress is being made on the scientific understanding of the internal processes in gallium nitride materials. Together with advanced technological processes lasers in the blue region of the spectrum have been achieved. Extending the lasing wavelengths into the green region will make possible new applications such as portable, compact and efficient pico-projectors. Recently, Tyndall received funding for a 3-year project to develop long-wavelength (λ>470 nm) visible laser diodes in collaboration with a number of European partners. The Tyndall element of the project is two-fold: namely to develop new structural designs for the layers and to realise the lasers using processing technologies. As a consequence, we now have a vacancy for a post-doctoral research scientist who will be able to lead the technical development at Tyndall.

The role of the researcher will be:

  • To perform simulations on different designs for long-wavelength laser diodes, so as to provide recommendations to the partners who are responsible for the epitaxial growth
  • To oversee the device fabrication development and to carry out some of the device fabrication steps
  • To characterise devices and to analyse the test results
  • Manage the project on a day to day basis

The applicant should have a PhD degree in Physics, Electronic Engineering or a related subject and have experience with modelling and characterisation of gallium nitride materials and devices. He/She should have a demonstrated track record in the field with scientific publications and have the aptitude to manage a scientific project.

Tyndall has been active in gallium nitride research since 1998 (www.tyndall.ie/GaN) and are currently developing LED devices for specialised applications, laser diodes, and power rectifier devices for space applications. The successful applicant will join this established research team. This appointment will be for a period of up to 3 years.
