Title: PhD position in tuneable VCSELs at telecommunication wavelengths
Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) require only nanometer thick optical gain regions. On the other hand these lasers require mirrors with 99% reflectance. These lasers can be used in sensing and telecommunication applications but further improvement in the device characteristics will increase the range of applications. This project is about modeling and experimentation in order to fully understand the physics of the devices as a result of spectral and temporal feedback into the laser cavity. This feedback can be used of the change in optical properties of the VCSEL such as increasing the coherence length of the laser. Up to now the laser mirrors have been realized with multilayer stacking of different dielectrics. This project will also investigate the performance of VCSEL where the mirror is realized using sub-wavelength gratings. Funding for this position is through the EU 7 th Framework program as part of a collaborative research project.
Applicants must have a degree in Physics, Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related discipline which covered semiconductor devices and a demonstrated interest in the above topics.
To apply for this position, please submit a CV to careers@tyndall.ie quoting the reference number.
