Vertilas to launch single-mode 1310/1550nm VCSEL for 10Gbit/s

At the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Cannes on 24-28 September, Vertilas GmbH of Garching, near Munich, Germany will present its latest-generation 1310nm and 1550nm long-wavelength vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSELs), which have an optimized device structure based on benzocyclobutene (BCB). Together with newly developed high-speed pads, BCB-based lasers enable applications of up to 10 Gbit/s, VERTILAS says.

The high performance and low threshold current makes the components extremely valuable for the newest generation of small-form-factor optical modules, such as SFP+ and XFP, the company says. The lasers will be offered in standard TO-46 packages and are being integrated into application-specific assemblies such as pigtails and receptacles.

Vertilas’ technology is based on a unique buried tunnel junction (BTJ) device structure, InP, and a special heat sink design to manage the heat generated inside the VCSEL, allowing the design and manufacture of high-performance VCSELs with optimized optical output power. “The trend towards smallest-form-factor modules and very low-power components highlights the benefits of our VCSEL solutions,” says CEO Christian Neumeyr.
