Telstra partners with Infinera to upgrade submarine routes in Asia Pacific

Infinera Corp of Sunnyvale, CA, USA, a vertically integrated manufacturer of digital optical network systems incorporating its own indium phosphide-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and Telstra Global, which supplies managed network services and international data, voice and satellite services, have announced the upgrade of multiple ultra-long-haul submarine cable routes, optimizing capacity and providing scalability and reliability on key routes of Telstra’s network.

The Infinera Intelligent Transport Network should enable Telstra to quickly deploy 10G, 40G and 100G Ethernet and OTN services on:

  • Telstra Endeavour – a 9124km submarine cable connecting Sydney and Hawaii;
  • Telstra’s Designated Fibre Pair on the Asia America Gateway (AAG) submarine cable connecting Hawaii and California; and
  • Reach North Asia Loop (RNAL), which spans 9000km to connect Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.

“Our job is to ensure we are adapting and creating capacity where it is required,” says Telstra Global’s chief operating officer Darrin Webb. “Demand for network services in the Asia Pacific region is growing exponentially and the addition of Infinera’s DTN-X platform means we will be well placed to meet the speed and capacity needs of our customers,” he adds.

“We are continually developing our network to meet customers’ requirements, and this is just one of the projects we are working on to ensure our network is always growing, improving and providing world-class services,” Webb continues.

“As global businesses turn to cloud-based offerings, we’re seeing increasing demand for reliable, global connectivity,” notes Infinera’s chief technology officer, co-founder & president Dr David Welch. “With an Infinera Intelligent Network deployed across Endeavour, AAG and RNAL, Telstra can deploy highly reliable, differentiated services to their customers while reducing capital and operating costs through scale, multi-layer convergence and automation,” he adds. “Telstra Global’s deployment is a great example of how long-haul super-channels with SD FEC [soft-decision forward-error correction] are accelerating the pace of global communities.”

The DTN-X is designed to scale without compromise to enable future upgrades to terabit super-channels and Terabit Ethernet. It converges 5 Terabits of non-blocking OTN switching into the same platform, resulting in more efficient network utilization when compared to conventional WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing) architectures. Intelligent software combined with this converged platform automates manual operations to lower operational costs and enable faster service delivery.
