Ocean Thin Films qualifies Veeco’s SPECTOR-HT IBD system for high-volume optical filter production

Epitaxial deposition and process equipment maker Veeco Instruments Inc of Plainview, NY, USA says that its SPECTOR-HT ion beam deposition (IBD) system has recently been qualified by Ocean Thin Film, which specializes in designing and depositing precision thin-film optical coatings, for the high-volume production of optical filters to be used in applications including biophotonics, defense, display, aerospace and lighting.

“Veeco’s SPECTOR-HT IBD system allows us to deliver high-quality optical filters to the market faster by achieving ion beam quality films at superior deposition rates,” comments Randel Mercer, Ocean Thin Films’ VP, business development. “After comparing Veeco’s deposition technology to other coating platforms, we are confident that SPECTOR-HT will give Ocean Thin Films a distinct production advantage,” he adds.

As an optical coating platform, more than 200 SPECTOR systems have shipped worldwide over the past 14 years. Compared to previous SPECTOR systems, the SPECTOR-HT provides up to 400% increase in system throughput (through improved deposition rates and increased lot sizes), up to 300% increase in target material utilization (for reduced maintenance and lower cost of ownership) and 50% better material uniformity, reckons Veeco.
