Anadigics’ HELP4 PAs enable S 4G and SII X additions to Samsung’s Galaxy smartphone family

RF and mixed-signal semiconductor maker Anadigics Inc of Warren, NJ, USA is shipping production volumes of its AWT6622 and AWT6624 fourth-generation High-Efficiency-at-Low-Power (HELP4) power amplifiers (PAs) to Samsung Electronics for its new Galaxy S 4G and Galaxy SII X smartphones.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4G, available through T-Mobile, provides a 4-inch display, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, 1GHz processor, and Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. Similarly, the Samsung Galaxy SII X, available through Telus, offers a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.5-inch display, 8 megapixel camera with LED flash and Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

“The new Samsung Galaxy S 4G and Galaxy SII X leverage advanced HSPA+ connectivity, impressive displays, and powerful processors,” says Michael Canonico, Anadigics’ senior VP of worldwide sales. “Anadigics’ HELP4 power amplifier family has set the efficiency and performance standard to help extend battery-life in power-hungry multimedia-rich smartphones,” he adds.

Anadigics says that its HELP4 product family uses the firm’s exclusive InGaP-Plus technology to achieve optimal power-added efficiency across low-range and mid-range output power levels (via three mode states) and to provide what are claimed to be the lowest quiescent currents in the industry (less than 2mA).

As well as delivering a high level of integration (including internal voltage regulation and a ‘daisy chainable’ directional RF coupler with 20dB directivity, all in a 3mm x 3mm footprint), the AWT6622 and AWT6624 PAs deliver high HSPA+ efficiency to extend battery life in 4G handsets, smartphones, tablets, netbooks, and notebooks.

Operating at 1850-1910MHz (band 2), the AWT6622 has efficiency of 40% at +28.6dBm, 34% at +17dBm and 24% at +8dBm. Operating at 1710-1785MHz (bands 3, 4, 9, & 10), the AWT6624 has efficiency of 39% at +28.3dBm, 36% at +17dBm and 26% at +8dBm. The average current consumption reduction is 30% compared with previous-generation PAs.
