Ascent Solar sponsoring US-wide collegiate Innovative Solar Design Competition

Ascent Solar Technologies Inc of Thornton, CO, USA, which manufactures lightweight, flexible thin-film photovoltaic modules based on copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS), is sponsoring an Innovative Solar Design Competition for college students across the USA. The competition will last throughout the 2011–2012 school year and will allow both students and professors alike to explore uses for Ascent’s flexible solar modules.

The firm’s modules are capable of being directly integrated into military and space applications, building-integrated applications, and consumer electronics for portable power or configured as standalone modules for large-scale terrestrial deployment. For the competition, teams are expected to develop working prototypes of portable power applications, enabled using modules provided by Ascent.

The firm will also provide financial support for prototype development of approved designs. The teams with the top designs will receive up to $10,000 in cash prizes as well as potential internship and job opportunities with Ascent.

The firm says that, through the competition, it will help to spearhead innovative uses for portable solar power across all markets.
