Sharp to start mass producing blue LED chips in Fukuyama Plant

Sharp Corp says that it will start mass production of blue LED chips at its Fukuyama Plant in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan before the end of this year. Capital investment in the plant is about 15 billion yen (about
$164m).

The firm cites the growth in demand for LED backlights for LCD TVs and LED lighting fixtures driving the rapid increase in demand for blue LED chips. Just this January, Sharp began blue LED chip production at its Mihara Plant in Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. But to meet demand in the mid to long term, Sharp has since decided to also start production at the Fukuyama Plant and to expand materials procurement. This will boost Sharp's total annual production capacity of blue LED chips to about 5 billion units in fiscal 2011.

Sharp says that its blue LED chip production business in Fukuyama has been adopted as a project under the 'Fiscal 2009 subsidy scheme for promoting the location of low-carbon industry and creating employment' run by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
