Nichia ships engineering samples of 488nm blue-green laser

Japan’s Nichia Corp says that it has developed a 488nm blue-green GaN-based laser diode, which it will start shipping in March.

The estimated life-time exceeds 10,000 hours, and stable operation was achieved for 1000 hours for 5mW continuous-wave (cw) operation at 25°C (case temperature).

Nichia says that the 488nm laser has advantages including high-speed direct modulation, low power consumption, small volume, light weight, and low cost compared with conventional 488nm lasers for biomedical applications.

Nichia is exhibiting the 488nm laser at this week’s Photonics West 2008 show in San Jose, CA, USA (22-24 January).
